Dear Madam
The ability to patiently listen to the opinions of others even when you disagree with them is described as tolerance. The word has gained popularity in our politically correct fuelled world. Tolerance can also be defined as open mindedness. Peter Woods, your regular columnist, expects readers to be more open minded as he churns out his weekly spiritual flavour. Last weekend in his column, “That’s the Spirit” titled “Changing Orientation to the Earth”, Weekend Post 22/06/2019, is a prime example. Tolerant people should not be so open minded that their brains fall out.
Wood’s reminds me of a “radio shock jock” who intentionally makes outrageous and provocative statements to have his listeners react. Peter is an intelligent fellow who in previous columns admits to being somewhat of a neurotic (a neurosis is a mental condition that causes confusion and irrational expressions). This neurosis was certainly evident in his suggestion that the ancients tradition of directing their prayers to earth rather than heaven is more plausible and commendable. His down to earth philosophy is the old primordial religion of Gaianism (earth worship) a brand of paganism and animism, from which the Christian Gospel has unshackled us.
Is Peter still a pastoral therapist? This title was conspicuously excluded in his recent column. Is this significant? Has Peter wandered from his pastoral calling? It would seem that “neurotic” Wood’s needs to schedule an urgent visit with his mentor the legendary Bishop George Irvine. Is this what happens when Truth is suppressed and creation and not the Creator becomes the object of worship – Romans 1:25 says “Who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.”
