It is with ruefulness that I respond to Peter Wood’s column, 20th April 2019, ‘Cross, no easy way to duck responsibility.” As he has so often done, Woods chose the Easter weekend (a sacred occasion for some) to enunciate his negativism toward the life, atoning sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus, Christ the Lord. He even goes so far as to question the historicity of Christ. On a personal and social note I find Peter to be a likeable and amiable chap, but the timing of his article was in poor taste and most insensitive given the significance of Easter to so many readers. No ancient document is as well attested biographically than the Bible. The vast majority of historians of ancient history agree that when the standard criteria or critical investigation is applied to the historicity of Jesus the result is effectively certain. Independent sources, like Josephus, Tacitus and Pliny of that era all made reference to the life of Christ Jesus. The “Christ myth theory”, as espoused and regurgitated by Woods is absolute nonsense and, dare I say, borders on shoddy and poor scholarship.
Your columnist seems to have to prove to himself that he has chosen the right spiritual pathway by incessantly attacking the One who said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one can come to the Father but through me.” Why spend your whole life hating and attacking unicorns if you don’t believe they exist.
Woods, sarcastically implies that relying on Christ’s disciples for empirical proof is like submitting a reference for employment by ones mother. Let this sink in. I know of some mothers with integrity of the highest order who would give the most reliable and honest testimonial of their children. I know this for a fact because I had such a mom. To accuse the First Century Christians of bias is to make them purveyors of lies and forgeries. The harshest of all sceptics, be they atheists, agnostics or non-Christians will concur with Pontius Pilate, “I find no fault with this man.” The truth of the Bible never changes, but it’s critics do.
